Job Opening: Preschool Classroom Assistant

Position Summary

The part time (0.5 FTE) Teaching Assistant assists the Teacher in implementing and maintaining a safe, clean, Christian-based learning environment and in assuring the well being and safety of the children in his/her care.


Essential Functions

  • Observes and monitors children’s activities to insure each child’s safety

  • Implements activities as planned by the Teacher from the posted weekly lesson plan

  • Supports children’s emotional and social development, encourages understanding of others and positive self-concept

  • Confers with parents, children, staff, supervisor, etc. for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information

  • Maintains a calm attitude and a soft voice, and encourages this attitude and voice in others working in the classroom

  • Monitors children for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment

  • Treats all children, parents and staff with dignity and respect, guarding each child’s right to privacy of person

  • Uses positive, developmentally appropriate guidance techniques to manage behavior in the classroom

  • Refers parent concerns to the Teacher or the Director as appropriate

  • Administers first aid to children as to meet immediate health care needs

  • Organizes, sterilizes, disinfects and stores toys, equipment and materials to ensure order in activity areas

  • Performs housekeeping duties such as cleaning and dishes using approved cleaning methods

  • Participates in various meetings (e.g. staff development, staff meetings, etc.) for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving skills and knowledge

  • Reports observations and incidents (e.g. accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, safety conditions, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel

  • Communicates with and listens to children


Other Duties

  • Other assigned tasks on an as needed basis

  • Follows all policies in the Employee Handbook


Minimum Qualifications

  • Is at least 18 years of age

  • High school graduate or equivalent or currently enrolled in high school or equivalency program

  • Provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States

  • Has or will obtain CPR, first aid, and blood borne pathogen training within 30 days of hire

  • Able to speak clearly and model the English language to children

  • Able to perform basic math, understand written procedures and understand multi-step written and oral instructions given in English

  • Knowledge of positive discipline practices

  • Reliability: arriving on time and working the entire scheduled shift on a consistent basis

  • Maintains confidentiality of parent, child, and staff information except as required by law

  • Attends all mandatory staff meetings and training as well as school sponsored parent and family functions as directed

  • Wears appropriate attire

  • Exhibits tact, patience, kindness and a positive attitude at all times

  • Demonstrates loyalty to the Preschool at all times

  • Able to collaborate and work with others


Reporting Relationship

This position reports to the Director of the Preschool


Physical Demands

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 30% sitting, 30% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed under some hazardous conditions.


Environmental Conditions

The Teaching Assistant will be working in a busy and occasionally noisy environment. There may be a number of activities and situations happening at once, and the Teaching Assistant will have to supervise children at all times.


Sensory Demands

The Teaching Assistant may experience smells associated with toileting and children who are ill. There may be times that the environment is noisy and busy.


Success Factors

Consistent attendance, time management skills, dependable nature, professional attitude in all situations, cultural sensitivity and compassion, and willingness to learn are absolutely necessary.
