Every year, the American Public Health Association leads the observance of National Public Health Week (April 7-13, 2025)—a time to recognize the vital contributions of public health and highlight the ongoing challenges to health equity in our communities. Public health is about more than just avoiding illness; it’s about fostering environments where everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy and full life.

Faith and Health: A Sacred Connection
Scripture reminds us of the deep connection between our well-being and the well-being of those around us. “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” – 3 John 1:2 (NIV). Health is not just a physical condition—it is also emotional, mental, and spiritual. As a community of faith, we are called to care for our neighbors by advocating for health equity and ensuring access to resources that promote well-being for all.
Public Health Issues That Matter
Each year, National Public Health Week focuses on key topics that influence the health of our communities, including:
✅ Climate Change & Health – The effects of climate change contribute to air pollution, natural disasters, and increased health risks. Advocacy for sustainability is also advocacy for public health.
✅ Public Health Workforce – Those working in healthcare and public health face burnout and challenges. Supporting and strengthening this workforce ensures healthier communities.
✅ Health Equity & Access – Systemic barriers prevent many from receiving quality healthcare. Addressing these inequalities helps create a just and healthier society.
How You Can Get Involved
Public health is not just the responsibility of professionals—it’s something we can all contribute to in our daily lives. Here’s how you can take action this week:
Prioritize Your Own Well-Being – Schedule a check-up, commit to a healthier habit, or take time for self-care.
Learn About Public Health Challenges – Attend a workshop, read an article, or listen to a podcast on health topics affecting our world.
Show Gratitude to Healthcare Workers – A simple thank-you to those who work tirelessly to care for others can go a long way.
Advocate for Health Equity – Support policies that promote access to quality healthcare and work to eliminate disparities in our communities.
A Prayer for Public Health Week
"God of Life and Healing, in this Public Health Week, we pray: For wisdom to combat climate change's health impacts. Strengthen the public health workforce, their service, and their resilience. Optimize health for all, dismantling inequity. Guide us to advocate through an equity lens and listen to people who face the biggest health challenges and unequal access to care. May our actions reflect your love and compassion, and may we work together to create a healthier, more just, and sustainable world for all. Amen."
